Journal of Hip-Hop Culture

Timothy is a writer, trainer, educator, ordained minister and pundit of hip-hop culture and youth development. Timothy is an adjunct lecturer at the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University and is one of the faculty coordinators for Howard University’s Hip-Hop Studies minor program. His writing credits include the books “Prayers Proverbs Parables,” “Where Are We Going?,” “The Way 14:6,” with contributions to the books, “Be a Father,” “Souls of my Brothers,” “HipHopEd: The Compilation of Hip-Hop Education,” “The Hip-Hop Mindset: The Healing Power of Hip-Hop” and “The Bloomsbury Handbook of Hip Hop Pedagogy.”

Timothy was one of the founders of The Cultural Initiative Inc., which developed and implemented the Annual Hip-Hop Conference at Howard University from 1992-1997. Timothy’s innovative view of hip-hop as a mindset allows him to engage and encourage educators to identify the multiple intelligences and transferable skills that are on display among their students who engage in various hip-hop art forms.

The collaboration between entrepreneurship and education came naturally to Timothy throughout his connection to Howard University as a student and alum. Timothy worked with Howard’s School of Business in the launching of their ELI (Entrepreneurship Leadership Innovation) Institute where he helped launch an entrepreneurship minor available to students from all majors. As a social entrepreneur, Timothy created a venture called Crushed I.C.E. (Individualized Creative Expression) as a joint community service project between Howard University and a local honors high school. Crushed I.C.E. challenged high school and college students to work together to examine the current state of popular culture and create narratives that promoted their stories of overcoming obstacles and capturing opportunities.

As hip-hop continues to expand its reach into every aspect of our society’s culture, Timothy has helped pioneer hip-hop as a teaching and prevention strategy tool by working with The Youth Popular Culture Institute and co-authoring “Hip-Hop 2 Prevent Substance Abuse and HIV” (H2P). H2P is the only hip-hop based prevention program listed in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) registry. Timothy is the Chief Visionary Officer of HipHopEd and served as the curator and moderator for the weekly “Cyber Cypher” #HipHopEd twitter(X) spaces chat (2010-2024) which presented timely discussions on education, hip-hop and youth development that served as professional development for educators, parents, practitioners and youth. As a part of HipHopEd, Timothy worked to develop and expand its international hip-hop education program, Science Genius and is one of the leaders of its annual conferences. Timothy is the founder and president of Techniques4Learning LLC, a company committed to supporting organizations, colleges, and k-12 schools across the country in the areas of youth engagement, youth development, staff training, and curriculum/activity content creation. Timothy’s greatest technique for learning has been his experiences as a husband to Vanessa and a father to Jasmine and Isaiah.
