MEET THE GROOVE JUNKIES

Shanna Lim

My work is driven by the inquisitive, strange, and rawness of art. I am a vessel for human social structural research and believe in the aesthetic that the human body is a tool for endless expressiveness and concentrated communication. My presentation vocabulary thrives in a fusion of Post-modern, urban social street styles and Asian dialects of dance alongside theatre, storytelling, Installations, collaborations, body art, and extravagant art props that enhance senses into a breathing visual art performance. presentations tackle themes from sex trafficking and social justice, to personal duets that excavate a patrons momentary emotions coupling them with me, offering them a unique kinesthetic experience.

When culminating works, the underlying question is directed to the audience; how can I create stimulating opportunities of communication through the art that allows a developed movement story to connect in real time through similarities and differences? I take pride in creating each work within the power of presence, making audience necessary to the arc of my story, and showing them through their eyes, how art can heal, as well as the priceless value of being unique & strange because we all embody both.

Mariama “Ama” Law

Mariama "Ama" Law began her dance training with Kankouran West African Dance Company. Literally being born into the African culture, as both of her parents are founding members. She graduated with a B.S. in Biology and a certificate in Women's Studies from University of Maryland. While at UMD she enjoyed dancing, choreographing and leading Dynamic hip hop dance team.

She is co-director of Project ChArma, a collective of teaching artists, hip hop guardians, DMV representatives, parents, lovers, achievers, students and hip hop ambassadors who promote social change through movement. Pronounced “Karma” because it guides our lives.  Law is also an alumni of local hip hop groups Culture Shock D.C. and KickRocks crew.

Most recently, she received her MFA in dance from UMD and has been teaching as an adjunct there as well as American University. She is a passionate educator, always searching for new avenues to provide inspiration to the future generation of movers to not only become fierce but knowledgeable individuals.
