Kayla Nelson
Washington, D.C. Youth Poet Laureate | 2026
Kayla Nelson is a gifted young poet, scholar, and emerging leader committed to using her voice to uplift others. A proud native Washingtonian, Kayla is a 14-year-old freshman at Coolidge Senior High School’s Early College Academy, where she is already taking college-level courses while pursuing her love for English and history. Her academic ambition reflects her deep belief in the power of language, not only to communicate, but to transform, challenge, and inspire.
Kayla’s powerful poetry and compelling stage presence have earned her opportunities to perform on some of the region’s most renowned stages, including Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, Arena Stage, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Howard University, and Audi Field. She has also been published by respected arts and literary organizations including DC SCORES, Day Eight, and Do the Write Thing, amplifying her message even further.
Fluent in Spanish after more than a decade in bilingual education, Kayla is equally passionate about service and community. She is an active member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Arlington, Virginia, where she has sung in the youth choir, participated in dramatic productions, and shared her poetry. Kayla also volunteers as a translator during the church’s monthly community food giveaways, demonstrating her belief that talent and purpose are strengthened by compassion and service.
A former middle school basketball and soccer player, Kayla approaches life with discipline, teamwork, and heart. She aspires to become a journalist to be a voice for the voiceless, bringing light to untold stories and advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves.
Bright, thoughtful, and driven, Kayla Nelson is a rising creative force whose future promises to be as bold and inspiring as the stories she intends to tell.
