I Am
Volume 5, Issue 1
“Unfortunately, as a pivotal space of cultural production for brown girls, Hip Hop’s willingness to acknowledge a broader spectrum of the black urban experience—one that addresses the multi-dimensions of class, color, sexuality and exposure among other factors—has yet to be seen. We still lack accurate representation of contemporary black womanhood and femininity. Little from a black female standpoint regarding their images and representations, constructions of identity and ideologies has been given much airtime.”
