(V8, I1) When I first came to South Africa kwaito music was all the rage. I was really digging music from artists like TK Zee, Arthur, Trompies and M’du. I don’t remember hearing much local hip-hop being played at all on the radio or TV shows. There was a video music TV show on Friday nights on SABC1 that would play some hip-hop called Studio Mix with Bob Mabena. I would sit down with my host family religiously every week to watch it after dinner. Soon after my arrival in Mahwelereng, I remember seeing a big mural of Tupac on a wall and being very impressed that they loved him enough to make a tribute this far across the globe.
