NEHARIKA KUMAR
2025 Washington, DC Youth Poet Laureate
Neha Kumar is a Washington DC native who exclusively sleeps with a notebook under her pillow. She loves writing poetry, creative nonfiction essays, fictional short stories, and wants to experiment with every form of writing. Her writing draws from her experiences with everything the sun touches—from the complexities of girlhood to her lifelong obsession with stars and outer space. Neha is an editor for her school’s newspaper The Discus, and her work has been recognized by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, the JWM Poetry Contest, and published in her school’s literary journal Half-in-Earnest. She is the recipient of her school’s Writer’s Prize, Killip-McMahon Award for Creative Writing, and an alumna of the Sewanee Young Writer’s Conference. When she’s not writing, Neha can be found either at the pool, attempting to chart the stars, or on the cathedral lawn with a cup of home-made chai in hand blasting DPR Ian through her headphones.
