Alternative Winter Break: Photography With Jati Lindsey

Alternative Winter Break: Photography With Jati Lindsey

Jati Lindsay was born in New Jersey and moved to the Washington, D.C. area in the 1990s.  He began photographing scenes in the historical U Street Northwest neighborhood in Washington, D.C. – documenting captivating pre and post gentrification everyday life.  Lindsay is well-known for his raw black and white imagery shot in the purest photography form - film.  He has become a master in creating striking photos using a wide array of cameras including: half –frames up to 4x5, 35 mm, medium, format, and large format.

Lindsay’s most highly recognized photography is music documentary work.  He has photographed some of the most influential young jazz musicians in the industry – many who are part of milestone record labels.  His work has been credited in many magazine, newspapers, journals, and books; and exhibited in museums, art galleries, and public city art commissions.

This year, Lindsay’s large-scale photography was exhibited in a solo exhibition entitled Jazz Now at the Regional F. Lewis Museum of African American History and Culture in Baltimore, Maryland. His work is also currently on view at the For Whom it Stands exhibit at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. Lindsay is featured in two Leica books, published in 2012 and 2013. Journalists and art curators have identified Lindsay as one of the most important contemporary jazz photographers of our time.
