American culture is inextricably interwoven with Muslim cultures. Building on a legacy that spans centuries, Words Beats & Life will produce At the Table: Food, Music and Cultures from Muslim America highlighting contemporary Muslim American contributions to American cultures through food, music and design with a special focus on Black Muslim communities. The project will be multi-pronged in order to have both broad distribution and deep engagement. At the Table will consist of six multi-disciplinary storytelling experiences that will be filmed as a six episode docuseries. These will be supplemented with in-person and online discussion groups, social media campaigns, a digital resource guide and curriculum centered on the impact of Muslim American creatives.
At the Table is inspired by the success of WBL’s “From Sifrs to Ciphers: Hip Hop is Muslim”, a series of original productions, performances and installations around the intersection of Hip Hop culture and Muslim identities (also partially funded by the Building Bridges program).
